Tacoma Art Museum PowerPoint:: part I

A few weeks ago, I shared a few snapshots from my powerpoint presentation at the Tacoma Art Museum: Transformative Visions in Northwest Contemporary Jewelry. However, I haven't found a way to post my powerpoint and instead would like to share snapshots from the first half of my powerpoint presentation.

In the beginning of the presentation, I spoke about how I was introduced to metalsmithing. In what really seems to have been by chance.... I had taken a metals class winter quarter of what was suppose to be my last year at the University of Washington. I was truly drawn to the medium and changed both my majors so I could get a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metals.

In these next few slides, I spoke about what influences my studio work as well as showed examples of my studio work and BFA thesis.

Currently, a lot of my studio work has to do with my culture, family, memories, travel, and change. I am continually drawn towards the search for “lost memories”. The reason I say lost is because I lived through these big changes in my life that I was too young to remember and I only know of from my family.

I would like to share with you a piece of my powerpoint presentation that tells a bit about what influences my studio work as well as describes my BFA thesis (which was about my families journey to America):

"I am going to give you a brief background about my roots, so you can better understand what influences a lot of my studio work. As mentioned, I was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1984 at time in Poland’s history when it was occupied by the Soviet Union. Communist Poland was far different from what Poland is today, thus my parents wanted a better life for my brother and I.

So in the summer of 1986 my parents decided to leave everything that they knew behind. They had to abandon everything that they had and fit whatever was left into our Volkswagon Beetle. We drove all the way from Poland to Italy, before we were able to come to America. Between are moves to Italy and Detroit my family and I would look through garbage, which people threw away, for things that were useful in every day life. I think these experiences are important to who I am and the kind of art that I design. In my studio work, I like to incorporate found objects that have to do with that period in my life. I think it is essential not to forget the past because it helps to understand myself now."

After this, I went into detail about each of the images from my thesis work and what inspired each one.

In the next few slides, I shared images from my 80's revisited series. In the first slide, I showed how I approach making pieces both in my studio and production work. (I like to first look at found objects, then at any pictures that I may have, and finally sketch out my ideas before I even start to make a piece.)

I had shared with the audience, how my collaboration with Christy Pelland, who is a photography, and Melissa Anderson a hair and makeup stylist for this photo shot was a bit different from my usual work because of the 80’s theme required for the project.

With these pieces, I challenged myself to remake and rethink the way you look at vintage jewelry and a certain period in time.

In these pieces, I was drawn to making something unique from mass produced pieces that came from a period which had no historical context and was more oriented towards fashion.

Tomorrow I will share with you the second half of my presentation.

photos from Oregon trip.

I just wanted to share with you some of the photos from my road trip last week to Oregon. I truly had such a wonderful time and it was a much needed little break. My boyfriend and I did some sightseeing in Portland and then headed out to Eastern Oregon for some hiking, fishing and camping. The weather was pretty much perfect except for having to set up the tent in some rain, but it came and went. I can't wait to go back!

If you would like to see some more photos from my trip, you can find them on my: flickr page

80's revisited.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned I would include some detail images of my 80's revisited series as well as describe what makes these pieces different from my usual studio work. The pieces as mentioned before were made in collaboration with Christy Pelland of c.pelland photography and Melissa Anderson (hair and makeup stylist) of Che'mel Salon for a photo shot. Just like with my other studio work, I used found objects in making each one of these pieces.

However, it was different from my usual pieces because of the 80’s theme required for the project. With these pieces, I challenged myself to remake and rethink the way you look at vintage jewelry and a certain period in time.
In these pieces, I was drawn to making something unique from mass produced pieces that came from a period which really had no historical context and was more fashion oriented.

Transformative Visions in Northwest Contemporary Jewelry.

So I have been away from posting a bit-- a lot of studio work and I was also busy preparing for my powerpoint presentation at the Tacoma Art Museum: Transformative Visions in Northwest Contemporary Jewelry. The lecture began with Carolyn Benesh, who has been the co-editor of Ornament Magazine for the past 35 years, sharing her "observations on personal adornment with a focus on Northwest contemporary jewelry." She spoke about metalsmiths such as: Mary Lee Hu, Ron Ho, Ramona Solberg, Andy Cooperman and many more.

Afterwards, Micki Lippe, Marty and Brit Simone of Vinosus, and I each discussed our studio work, production line jewelry, business approach, and more. The following images are snapshots of a few slides from my powerpoint presentation, while I try to figure out a way to post my entire powerpoint.

Here is a preview of some of the detail photos of the 80's revisited pieces. I will be posting more of those images soon.

Last preview:

I was a bit nervous since it was my first powerpoint presentation since I graduated from the University of Washington. It was a really great experience and I am really thankful for the wonderful opportunity. The program was then concluded with a panel discussion that was moderated by Amy McBride, Arts Administrator for the City of Tacoma.

Afterwards, I had another look at the Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection with some of my friends. Unfortunately that particular exhibition has ended, but don't miss out on seeing-- Loud Bones: The Jewelry of Nancy Worden at Tacoma Art Museum. It closes September 20th!

new collection.

I will be posting some new items in my Etsy shop next week!

However, I just wanted to share with you a little preview of one of the pieces from my new Moroccan inspired collection as well as an image from last week's photo shoot with Christy Pelland of c. pelland photography and Dannielle Matison.

Last Wednesday, I had dropped off some of my production line pieces at Christy's house, where Christy was going to do a lighting demo/photo shoot for a fellow photographer friend.

It is so neat to see my work on a model! The photo on the left is taken by Christy Pelland from the photo shoot (the model is wearing the same earrings that are on the right); the model's hair and makeup was done by Dannielle Matison. While the detail image on the right is of a pair of earrings from my new Moroccan inspired collection, taken by me. I am anxious to see how the rest of the photos turned out.... STAY TUNED!

Happy weekend everyone! :)
